Chebera-Churchura National (also spelled Chorchora) is a national park located in Ethiopia . The park area is 1215 km² and is located in the region Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region . The park was formerly part of Kulo Kontes commercial hunting area for elephant hunting. The decline in elephant populations in Africa and the need to have pristine habitat for elephant was the motivation for creating the national park. It received in 2005 officially national park status after discussions and negotiations with the local population. [1] National park area is between 550 and 1700 m , and varies between upland forests and hilly terrain with shrub vegetation. The climate is hot but lush, since it normally falls between 1,000 mm and 3,500 mm rainfall annually - most in the rainy season from April to August. There are many small rivers and streams in the park that forms three smaller lakes (Keriballa, Shasho and Koka). The park headquarters is located in the village Ameya just outside the park's boundaries.
Chebera-Churchura National Park lies about 460 km southwest of the capital Addis Ababa , and can be reached by road. Since the park is new, it is (pr. 2014) few facilities for tourists. 2010 was the first year the park had foreign visitors, but the number was only 20. |
